BUILDING THE PERFECT TEAM
By Jose Gomez, Jr., CEA, MVTA

An entrepreneur with an idea is like a loaded pistol. Pointed in the wrong direction, he can cause chaos and destruction. Point that same person with the same idea in the right direction, he can change the world. Building a good team will help to insure, through cooperation, that the efforts are indeed headed in the right place. There are few people good at everything (though my wife would disagree), but there are people incredibly skilled at the two or three things they know. Those people make excellent, vital players in the entrepreneurial playing field.

Just a few days ago, a friend of mine shared an insight that he gained through his years of being a successful entrepreneur. Tom owns several business, all growing – some thriving. He said that many people try to find others just like them to join forces with. He does the complete opposite. He just will not hire anyone like himself - or anyone else on his team. He looks for people that are coming from different perspectives, different backgrounds, bringing different ideas to explore. Sure, he also looks for people heading the same direction, willing to be a team player. But, the idea is to find people that will not just confirm the path that you are on – but REFINE it. That person is probably the one that God has sent.

That’s what makes a good movie – totally different characters all coming together to join in a marvelous adventure with a victorious ending. I can’t help but think of the team Jesus had in His disciples. Twelve different men, from different backgrounds and occupations – all destined to fulfill one mission.

Now, let me share something from my heart. As an entrepreneur, our tendencies lean towards doing everything on our own. I did that for years. But, the day that we learn to allow others to share in our ideas – to give it away and let someone else own a little of it, life changes. The strength of two and three begins to shine as you begin to see God’s promises fulfilled before your very eyes. Is team-building THAT important. Absolutely!

COMPONENTS OF A GOOD TEAM

It first takes humility, honestly, and love.

In order to build a magnificent, loyal team, you must first humble yourself. God has entrusted you with something much bigger than you. He will accomplish with or without you, if it is His will. Know that you may only be the beginning of something great that others will eventually continue. Commit to considering others before yourself, and you are well on your way to a great team.

Always ALWAYS be honest and sincere. Nothing kills a team more that suspicion, jealousy, and ill feelings. Prepare yourself to be open and encourage your team members to do the same. Balance the candid atmosphere with tact and consideration. You’re one step closer.

Finally, learn to love. Love every person that comes on your team. Love them to death. I have to tell you, I have the best team in the world. I would die to them and I know that they would do the same for me. Be willing to sacrifice for their sake. Be willing to be there for them when they need you. Be willing to love their families, their dreams, their weaknesses. Sometimes, love them enough to let them go if it does not work out.

Team is about cooperation – not a big mystery. What seems to be a puzzle for many is how to get the team to be effective. If you ask me, it starts before the team every begins. It starts with you, the entrepreneur, setting the example for everyone else as they come in the door. It starts with your tone, mannerisms, and willingness to be a team player yourself.
