EXPANDING YOUR BUSINESS
By Jose Gomez, Jr., CEA, MVTA

What happens when you have an exciting new business plan and you take the leap of faith to follow your heart…and it works!? All the effort pays off and you find yourself in the middle of a breakaway success, managing growth, chasing expansion, and managing a staff. That is what happened to me. In 2001, I left the Christian Network to pursue what I felt was an idea shoved in my head by God. I had plans and wild dreams of accomplishing so many things. But, I underestimated how ready I was and how right the time was to pursue it all. Within a few short years, my business was growing at a rapid pace and I was living my dream.

But, something strange happened…

I didn't exactly have a plan for what was next! I had visualized my success, but found myself without a plan for what came after. What do you do when you plan works… and it's your ONLY plan? I can still remember one late night after renting my first office. I walked into the conference room - MY conference room - and sat down in my chair at the end of the table. It felt great. It felt TERRIFYING! I was a mid-20s entrepreneur with over a quarter million dollars in cash and a business worth a couple million dollars with no idea what the plan was from here. I had never been that successful.

For the next few years, I wandered in that state, trying this and that. I felt the pressure of both expanding into unknown territory and protecting what I had built. The business continued to grow and I with it. Over time and with lots of dialogue and study, I began to see a clearer future and developed a plan that will probably take the rest of my life to complete.

So, Here's My Point

Many entrepreneurs only dream of the type of success I have had so far - for that great idea that becomes a full time adventure. God knows it takes hard work and a hard head to MAKE it work when things look like they are about to fall apart. But, like me, many entrepreneurs succeed and find themselves in the same place. We put so much effort into that business plan that we develop temporary tunnel vision. It seems to me just as important to have a post-success plan for yourself, which should include a few things that I would like to submit to you.

Let's go over my three top things to plan on after your business plan has become successful.

1. Plan On Accumulating Wealth

It may seem noble to keep reinvesting into your business to grow it, but it's not. You started your business to be independent and free to follow your ideas. You will have many ideas in your lifetime, so save up to finance them. Cash out of your business as often as possible and begin accumulating wealth for yourself. Pay off your house and your debt. Live stress-free.

2. Plan On Hiring A Manager

Once your business is up and running, plan on hiring someone to manage that business. You can't stay chained to your desk forever. After all, you're an entrepreneur, right? You will have new wild ideas to chase, and someone has to sail the ship while you are off duplicating your success over and over again. Hire and train someone to manage the day-to-day business and move on. It will help you to only have one person to hold accountable, especially as your staff grows.

3. Plan On Restlessness

As an entrepreneur, you will quickly become bored with the day to day drumbeat of your business, no matter how exciting it is… and that is absolutely normal. With your business manager in place, move on to the next idea. But, take all the lessons you've learned with you and develop your business with the other two points in mind. After all, you're a pro now. With one successful business under your belt, you know the secrets of unlocking your market and producing an unlimited number of ideas and will yield unlimited wealth for as long as you have breath.
